Turnpike Elementary serves Lansingburgh’s pre-kindergarten–2nd grade students and Rensselaer Park Elementary serves 3rd grade–5th grade. Students from each school’s special education classrooms will be participating in the Young Athletes event. Turnpike Elementary School is located at 55 New Turnpike Road in Troy, NY.
Opening remarks and games will take place on the Turnpike Elementary School Soccer Field from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. A one-hour lunch break will follow, and the event will conclude with a closing ceremony at 12:30 PM. During the closing ceremony, each student will be recognized and presented with a ribbon.
Expected guests at this event include New York State Senator Jacob Ashby, Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin, City of Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello & Deputy Mayor Seamus Donnelly, Rensselaer County Sheriff Kyle Bourgault & Undersheriff Michael Dinardo, City of Troy Chief of Police Daniel DeWolf and Rensselaer County Legislature members.
The event is the culmination of the Special Olympics Young Athletes program at Turnpike and Rensselaer Park this school year. Young Athletes is a sport and play program steeped in gross motor skills. The 8-week curriculum, which aligns with SHAPE Americas National Physical Education Standards, utilizes progressions, assessments, and individualized lesson plans to provide each student with a unique opportunity to excel within their inclusive physical education class. The culminating event is a celebration of the hard work and dedication to the program by these students and teachers. Each student will receive a Young Athletes shirt and award, while also participating in numerous stations that demonstrate some of the skills mastered over the past 8 weeks.
“The annual Young Athletes celebration at Lansingburgh Central School District is always a highlight of the spring season,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman. “Congratulations to each of the students who participated this year and thank you, as always, to the school community for prioritizing inclusion.”
The district extends special thanks to Special Olympics New York for their collaboration and assistance in making this event possible.
