Joseph Looks Forward to New Challenges at His First State Fall Games

For Joseph, Special Olympics New York has provided opportunities to develop his athletic skills, build lasting friendships and challenge himself through sports. Now, after years of competing, he is preparing for a new experience as he gets ready to attend his first State Fall Games in Glens Falls on October 16-17.

Joseph first became involved with Special Olympics while attending James E. Allen Junior/Senior High School, where Coach Larry invited him to join the track and field team. His first competition took place at Commack High School. Since then, Joseph has continued to grow as an athlete, with one of his favorite memories being when he finished first in the 50-meter run at his first Spring Games.

“It made all the hard work pay off and I was able to make my coach Larry proud of me,” Joseph said.

Today, Joseph competes in floorball, basketball, track and field, and golf, with basketball being his favorite. He especially enjoys practices, where he can keep moving between activities, work with different coaches and learn new techniques from fellow athletes.

Over the years, Joseph has continued to develop his skills and grow as an athlete. He has gained the ability to retain what he learns in each sport, adapt to changes, remain patient and communicate with others. Through practices and competitions, Joseph has also built meaningful relationships with athletes and coaches.

When Joseph learned he had the opportunity to attend the State Fall Games, he was excited and grateful. For him, the experience represents a chance to demonstrate what he has learned over the years while stepping outside his usual routine.

“This will give me a chance to meet new people and travel to a new place,” Joseph said. “I’ve not experienced anything on this level before and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Beyond the competition, Joseph is looking forward to exploring somewhere new and making new friends. His enthusiasm reflects what he values most about Special Olympics: the chance to continue learning, competing and connecting with others.

“Special Olympics holds a special place in my heart,” Joseph said. “I’ve been able to make many new friends over the years, athletes and coaches. I hope to be able to maintain these relationships and compete for years to come.”
