A Generous Start to Hudson Valley Fall Softball Season

Yorktown High senior donates funds as Hudson Valley fall softball season gets underway

Hopewell Junction, N.Y. – The fall softball season got an early boost in the Hudson Valley in early September when high school senior Katelyn Brown and her father Drew Brown donated a check for $550 to Special Olympics New York.

The Browns attended the second of two preseason softball scrimmage games between the Dutchess Hurricanes and the North East Westchester Recreation team in Hopewell Junction on September 11. It was there that the Browns presented the donation to Ellen Pikula, the Hudson Valley Region Director of Program for Special Olympics New York who then umpired the game that evening.

Katelyn Brown plays softball for Yorktown High School and she is determined to make a difference in her community for individuals with special needs. Along with her father, Katelyn started K’s for Kids. In addition to raising funds the group has conducted softball clinics and visited elementary schools to speak about inclusion and sportsmanship.

On the field, the Hurricanes led by Coach Kathi Nolan and North East coached by Nancy and Joe Bellini played twice before large and enthusiastic crowds. The first game was held on September 9 under the lights in Bedford Hills, while the final game was played two days later in Hopewell Junction.

The Hudson Valley softball season will continue in earnest on Sunday, October 4 with the annual Super Regional Fall Festival at Beacon Memorial Park. Activities are scheduled to run from 8 am to 3 pm with softball skills, unified games and traditional softball.
