Conrad Chiang’s Health Story
Conrad Chiang says the key to healthy living is choosing fruits and vegetables as often as possible. By eating a healthy diet, Conrad maintains a lean weight and is able to compete successfully in many challenging events with Special Olympics New York.
“I eat salads, fruit and yogurt every day,” Conrad said. “I always tell other athletes to eat more vegetables!”
A 36-year-old resident of Bayside, Queens, Conrad has been competing in Special Olympics New York events for 22 years. He is a member of the Athlete Leadership Council (ALC) and recently completed the training required to become a Special Olympics New York Health Messenger.
“I love Special Olympics because it’s very beneficial,” Conrad said. “I can make friends.”
One of Conrad’s favorite activities is swimming with the Cross Island Superstorms training club based out of the YMCA on Hillside Avenue in Queens Village. It is there that Conrad engages with other athletes in lively conversations about sports and fitness.
Those conversations sometimes center around food, a topic that Conrad has made an effort to learn more about in recent years. He noted that on a regular basis he eats carrots, broccoli, celery and cucumbers.
“Special Olympics is about healthy athletes, and you have to have healthy eating habits,” Conrad said.
Conrad’s commitment to healthy eating and fitness has paid off over the years. He has won dozens of medals in swimming, and he also competes in basketball and softball. He estimates he has won 250 gold medals in his career.
Conrad graduated from the Queens High School of Teaching in 2011 and currently works at the NYC Department of Motor Vehicles in College Point where he helps keep the facilities clean.
When he’s not working or practicing with the Superstorms, Conrad likes to spend time playing the piano. He recently learned to play “Romeo and Juliet” on the piano and continues to practice other songs. He also finds time to exercise every day.
“I do a lot of walking and also Jumping Jacks,” Conrad said.
