Meet Sydney Bailey, the Genesee Region’s New Associate Director of Development
“The energy here is incredible, and I love it,” said Sydney Bailey, the Genesee Region’s new Associate Director of Development. “The athletes have been so welcoming and excited to hear my story and how I got here. But I’m just as excited to learn more about them.”
Sydney joined Special Olympics New York in July, bringing a background in sports management, event operations, and a passion for building meaningful connections through sport.
After graduating from St. John Fisher University in May with a degree in sports management, Sydney spent the spring traveling across the country with the Savannah Bananas, working in merchandise and ticketing during the team’s nationally recognized baseball tour. Although the two organizations are very different, Sydney quickly recognized a common thread.
“I always wanted to work in sports,” Sydney said. “The Savannah Bananas’ mission is fans first. Here at Special Olympics, everything is for the athletes and their families. There’s a similar energy at both places, especially during the larger sporting events.”
Sydney’s connection to Special Olympics began in high school, when a family friend encouraged her to become a Unified partner in basketball and bowling. While attending St. John Fisher University, a professor introduced her to the broader mission of Special Olympics, helping her discover the organization’s impact across New York.
“I realized there was so much more to Special Olympics than just Unified Sports,” Sydney said. “I knew I was walking into a great organization.”
Now, Sydney is focused on building relationships throughout the Genesee Region. As Associate Director of Development, she connects with sponsors, community partners, athletes, and supporters to raise awareness and help create more opportunities for Special Olympics athletes.
“I want to meet as many people as I can,” Sydney said. “Relationship-building is such a big part of this organization. Please come say hi. And if you don’t come to me, I’ll come to you. I love meeting new people, so please don’t hesitate to stop and talk.”
