SEFCU to Make Donation to Special Olympics New York for Every Medal Won by USA Olympic Team

Team USA’s success in the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing will have a direct impact on Special Olympics athletes across New York State. For every medal won by Team USA during the winter games, SEFCU will make a donation to Special Olympics New York.

SEFCU will donate $500 for every gold, $250 for every silver, and $125 for every bronze medal won by the USA Olympics Team.

The funds will help people with intellectual disabilities experience the thrill of competing in authentic, inclusive sports and participating in learning and enrichment programs that will help them develop skills and pursue their passions.

“Watching the Olympics has never been so much fun, thanks to SEFCU and Michael Castellana,” said Stacey Hengsterman, president & CEO of Special Olympics New York. “It brings our athletes and families such joy to know that with every medal Team USA wins in Beijing, the Special Olympics programs that they live for will be supported.”

The largest state chapter in the country, Special Olympics New York serves more than 68,000 athletes across New York with year-round sports training, athletic competition, and health screenings. Special Olympics New York also partners with about 250 schools statewide to offer Unified Sports, where students with and without disabilities compete as teammates. All Special Olympics New York programs are offered at no cost to athletes, their families, or caregivers.

“Thanks to Special Olympics New York, thousands of athletes in our communities are achieving their goals and finding the champion within themselves. We are thrilled to support their learning, coaching, experiences, and ultimately their achievements both on the field of play and in life,” said SEFCU President and CEO Michael Castellana. “We’ll be cheering hard for Team USA during the winter games because we know their Olympic glory will help Special Olympians chase their dreams too.”

This is the second time in six months SEFCU will make a significant donation to Special Olympics New York based on Team USA’s success.

Last summer, SEFCU donated more than 43-thousand dollars to Special Olympics New York based on medals earned by Team USA during the Summer Games. Those funds supported New York athletes and coaches who will participate in the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando this summer.
