🏅 Mathew Christian McKone: A Champion on and off the Field

Mathew Christian McKone, 22, from Ballston Lake, New York, has been an active athlete with Special Olympics New York for the past five years. His dedication and enthusiasm have led him to participate in a variety of sports, including golf, basketball, bowling, track and field, hockey, and his favorite—baseball/softball.

Baseball holds a special place in Mathew’s heart, as it’s a sport he shares with his father, who taught him how to play and continues to support his growth on the field. Mathew serves as team captain, assists coaches with lineups and field positioning, and keeps teammates focused during games. His leadership, knowledge of the game, and commitment to his team make him a vital part of the lineup. He’s often the first to arrive at the field and the last to leave.

In addition to his achievements in baseball, Mathew has recently found success in track and field, competing with the Saratoga Pacers. In his first season, he earned gold medals in all four of his events: the 50m, 100m, long jump, and throwing competition. Before that, Mathew spent eight years playing hockey with the Clifton Park Eagles. Despite wearing a leg brace as a child due to a bowing condition, he worked hard to learn how to skate and never let his physical challenges stop him from playing the sport he and his family love.

For Mathew, sports are about more than competition—they’re about friendship, discipline, and personal growth. One of his proudest moments came during a tournament on his father’s birthday, when he hit a grand slam to win the game. Losses, like those at the tough Beacon tournament, have also been learning experiences, reminding him of the importance of staying united as a team even when things don’t go their way.

Mathew’s involvement in Special Olympics has helped him build lasting friendships, grow as a leader, and continue developing the skills and values that matter both on and off the field.

“Growing up, I never made a lot of friends, and I’ve received more awards now than I ever did back then,” Mat shares. His journey is one of growth and determination, proving that dedication and passion open new doors.

Mat admires his family deeply. They’ve played many sports and taught him not only the rules of the game but also the importance of teamwork and staying involved. Their support inspired him to keep pushing forward.

When asked what going to the USA Games means to him, Mat says:“It means I get to show the nation how my talent has improved.”

Outside of sports and work, Mat enjoys spending his spare time watching TV, reading books, and collecting Native American artifacts. He also has a creative side—he loves playing guitar and expressing himself through music. Mat also is employed as a Warehouse Worker at HZ Electric.
