Building Skills and Confidence Through Basketball at CDD

For athletes at the Center for Developmental Disabilities (CDD), this summer marked the beginning of a new opportunity to learn, compete, and grow through sport. CDD hosted its first Special Olympics-sponsored sports program, giving adult athletes the chance to develop their basketball skills and experience the excitement of competition.

“We wanted to expand opportunities for the individuals we support to explore sports, challenge themselves, and experience the excitement of being part of a team,” said Meghan Ottaiano, Supervisor of Recreation Services at CDD. “Special Olympics provides an inclusive environment where our individuals of all abilities can participate, build confidence, and be recognized for their efforts and accomplishments.”

Under the guidance of Head Coach Fadi Ali, athletes spent several weeks practicing fundamental basketball skills, including passing, dribbling, and shooting, before concluding their season with a final competition in August.

Ali said one of the most notable aspects of the program was seeing how consistent training helped athletes improve their skills. He observed that athletes’ scores increased with consecutive practices, highlighting the impact of regular participation.

One athlete’s experience at the final competition was especially memorable. Initially hesitant to attend practices because he felt he was not good enough by his own standards, the athlete received encouragement from Ali, his house manager, recreation direct support professional and clinical director. With their support, he decided to compete and ultimately earned second place in his division, finishing just a few points behind the first-place athlete.

For Ali, the moment highlighted the importance of encouraging athletes to believe in themselves and give themselves the opportunity to succeed.

Throughout the program, CDD also saw opportunities for athletes to try new experiences, connect with others and be part of something meaningful. Ottaiano emphasized that every athlete expresses themselves differently, but being included, recognized and celebrated can make a lasting impact.

Looking ahead, CDD hopes to continue growing its partnership with Special Olympics New York, expanding opportunities for participation, and creating more experiences that promote inclusion, teamwork, and a sense of accomplishment for every athlete.
