Special Olympics New York Announces “Athlete of the Month” Series in Partnership with NY ABLE

Albany, NY – Special Olympics New York and the New York Achieving a Better Life Experience Program (NY ABLE) are pleased to announce the launch of an all-new Athlete of the Month program to highlight the achievements and character of individuals with and without disabilities participating in Special Olympics programs throughout the state.

NY ABLE is administered by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and allows eligible individuals with disabilities and their families to save for qualified disability related expenses, without limiting their ability to benefit from Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, and other federal programs.

Athletes will be considered for this honor based upon recommendations by Special Olympics New York staff, coaches, fans and the community.

“With more than 42,000 athletes served all across New York, our organization has so many stories to tell,” said Stacey Hengsterman, President & CEO of Special Olympics New York. “Thank you to NY ABLE for its continued commitment to our athletes and the Special Olympics movement.”

“NY ABLE is proud to support the Athlete of the Month program,” said New York State Comptroller DiNapoli. “Many deserving, talented athletes will be recognized, and we hope through this partnership we can continue to eliminate barriers and raise awareness about the benefits of the NY ABLE program.”

Athletes featured must exhibit leadership in one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Achievement in sport
  • Sportsmanship (respect for coaches, officials, opponents, teammates)
  • Character (playing by the rules, honesty, integrity)
  • Commitment to improvement
  • Perseverance
