Will Smith began participating in Special Olympics New York with the Pioneer League in 1999. He is now an athlete with North East Special Recreation. He currently competes in floor hockey, basketball, track & field, bowling, volleyball, unified bowling and unified floor hockey. Additionally, Will officiates soccer, floor hockey and basketball for the Pioneer League as an outside contractor for Section 1 Athletics (SWBOCES).
Will had the opportunity to participate in the 2013 National Games in New Jersey in Unified softball. He also participated at the International level in floor hockey, in 2015 in Japan, as well as softball in China 2007.
In addition to being a fantastic Special Olympics athlete, Will is also a local Athlete Congress member. He has represented Special Olympics New York as a guest speaker at numerous events throughout the year. His favorite speaking engagement was the 2018 East Point National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Will also enjoys speaking at local schools to raise awareness.
Will graduated from Somers High school in Somers, NY in 2006 with his Regents Diploma. He has taken classes working toward his B.A. at Westchester Community College. He currently works at New York Sports Club and as part-time mentor at Select Services. Occasionally, Will works as a substitute support staff at Somers High School. Prior to his employment at New York Sports Club, Will worked at A&P for six years. He started outside with carts and gained confidence in the workplace. He finished his this tenure in the meat department.
Will is also involved the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Rockland Polar Plunge, the Miles for Medals Walk and the Dream Ride to help raise money and awareness for Special Olympics New York. Will was also selected to attend the 2019 Dream Ride Australia.
